Bouncing Back Now Recommendation

Jyn Kyu Robertson has a wonderful life success story that can inspire and motivate practically anybody in the world, regardless of their race, gender, age, and nationality.
Jin was born and raised in Korea. She worked as a factory girl, waitress, and a maid. At age 22, she immigrated to the USA to become a maid with practically no English and $100 to her name. At the age of 28, Jin joined the U.S. Army as a private to escape from the domestic violence. Through determination, imagination, and sheer will, this battered, foreign-born single mother has retired as a U.S. Army major and received a Ph.D. from Harvard at the age of 57.

Jon’s Daughter Follows in Her Footsteps

Amazingly, given the difficult times in her life, Jin’s daughter was cited as a Presidential Scholar – an honor given to only 1 of 18,000 high school seniors. She graduated from Harvard and become a U.S. Army officer. She was following in her mother’s impressive footsteps.

Media Coverage

Korean TV has made documentaries of Jin’s American dream story which inspired and motivated millions of Koreans, regardless of their gender and age, several of which were on the verge of suicide until they heard Jin’s inspiring messages.

Jin is now Korea’s most popular motivational speaker having delivered over 500 speeches and a bestselling author of the books chronicling her amazing story that has sold more than 500,000 copies.

Robertson's MAJOR DREAM Showcases What Is Possible If You Only Believe

C. A. Webb "Conversations Book Club" (Jackson, MS)

I believe that appreciation is something that you develop, it's not something you are naturally born with. In the case of Jin Suh Robertson, though, we see that one thing she was endowed with from the beginning of her life was the desire to be her best. That is important as we discuss her book MAJOR DREAM. Robertson realized that it wasn't enough to just wish for something to happen in our lives. We have to work in concert with those wishes.

She had to do this as she look at her life in Korea and knew that if she stayed the conformity and complacency that inhabits so many would begin to envelop her as well. Because of this she took her studies seriously, even to the point of getting nose bleeds, but she knew that for her education and dedication would be what it would take to help her reach her full potential.

Working herself from menial jobs to eventually seeing the pay-off she had been hoping and waiting on, Robertson is able to share with us how all of this happened. It's not something that took off overnight, even though it might appear that way to some. Her journey is one that had its twists and turns, ups and downs but led to the place she was destined for.

MAJOR DREAM showcases what is possible if you only believe and act in harmony with those beliefs. As long as you don't give up on yourself anything is possible.

I love this Jin Robertson's book! I read it straight through in one evening despite my busy schedule. As a woman and an immigrant myself, I can identify with the many thoughts and actions that Jin had entertained while growing up in a traditional Asian society. The substance of the story, the crisp and simple way in which it's told, and Jin's subtle sense of humor made this reading both inspiring and fun for me. I look forward to reading her next volumes!

Major Inspiration

Irene Conlan "Irene" (AZ)

The astronauts are said to have "The right stuff." If "The Right Stuff" means all the qualities necessary to achieve big things, then Jin Kyu Robertson also has "The right stuff." This book is her story.

Her story is well told, interesting, compelling.

Life can't be much harder than growing up in a war torn country, in poverty, with an alcoholic mother. Not only did Jin Kyu survive - she eventually thrived. And she wasn't successful because people rose to the occasion to help a little girl with ambition. She was successful because she knew what she wanted and went after it with patience, hard work and endurance. She didn't give up. Her life story brings to mind the image of someone running an obstacle course - they don't know where or what the obstacles are until they are in front of their face. Jin had to change direction frequently, take detours, regroup, stop, make a lateral move, go back a few paces. No matter what happened, she got up and continued on, finding new ways to proceed.

This is a story that should be read by everyone having a pity party because they think their life is tough. It should be read by everyone who thinks the challenges are simply too big to tackle and the road to success and happiness too tortuous to travel. Her journey from being a child in Korea, coming to the United States with only $100 to work as a maid, becoming an Officer in the U.S. Army and getting a Ph.D. from Harvard makes what most complainers have experienced look like child's play.

This book should be on the required reading list in every school in the U.S., Japan and Korea. And if it is translated into more languages, it should be required reading in that country as well.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. / Dr. Jin Kyu Robertson’s personal account of emigrating from Korea and prospering in the United States is the basis of 'Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard Ph.D.' (ISBN 1453751076), which has sold more than half a million copies in her native country.

At the age of 22, Robertson immigrated to the United States with $100 in her pocket, very little English in her vocabulary and the promise of a job as a housemaid. Six years later, she didn’t find her life getting any better, aside from the birth of her daughter. Hoping to escape an abusive husband and a dull, unfulfilling life, Robertson signed up as a private for the United States Army.

Through sheer determination, imagination and will, Robertson created a better life for her and her daughter during the stint with the military. The author retired from the Army after serving twenty years and received her master’s and Ph.D. from Harvard University; her daughter followed in those same footsteps when she graduated from Harvard and joined the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer.

Robertson’s memoir strives to be considered one of America’s greatest personal success stories. She aims to show readers that people can create the lives they want despite the obstacles that often stand in the way of opportunity.

“Anyone can create the life they’ve always wanted,” Robertson says. “They have to be willing to give their best, place themselves in positions of opportunity, and take responsibility for producing quality results that cause others to want to work with you and for you.”

Robertson wants to inspire and motivate people through her personal story to help them live better and happier lives. Her memoir looks to help readers of all backgrounds to position themselves for opportunity and to live a life of success and happiness.

Major Dream - A Memoir For The Decade

"Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard PhD" is the memoir of Jin Kyu (Suh) Robertson, PhD. When reading Robertson's memoir, you'll soon realize that her life is the true representation of the "American Dream." Absolutely nothing was too great for her to overcome - and she succeeded in both life and career despite the oppressive obstacles she faced.

The beginning story of "Major Dream" begins with Jin receiving her PhD from Harvard at the age of 57 - not exactly the age of most college "students." It was an extraordinary moment in her life and one that she shared with family and friends who supported her. It was also the culmination of everything she had accomplished in her thirty-five years of being in America.

Harvard degrees and the level of success that Jin has received as an International motivational speaker and writer didn't come easy for this Korean immigrant who began her life in America as a housemaid. She was twenty-two years old, spoke no English and after purchasing a one-way ticket, had only $100 to her name - plus crushing debts to pay.

Born in 1948 in a small Korean fishing village named Wollae, Jin was pretty much isolated from the world. Her parents had never been to school and the family lived in abject poverty. Jin's father was a forced-laborer in a coalmine and Jin provides enough of her family's background for readers to visualize how denigrating their lives were.

"Major Dream" is truly remarkable in that it tells the story from beginning to present day of a young woman who succeeded against all odds and who ran the gamut from factory worker, waitress and housemaid to become a Major in the United States Army, Harvard graduate, a popular inspirational/motivational speaker and bestselling author.

Jin's story in "Major Dream" will appeal to every one of all ages who desire to live happier and more fulfilled lives. Immigrants to America, students, people who are trying to build careers or businesses and military personnel will especially find inspiration in "Major Dream"'s pages.

Jin is quite popular on the motivational speaking circuit, but somehow found time in her busy schedule to write her memoir, "Major Dream", and currently is the host of a radio talk show on the Voice of America/World Talk Radio called "American Dreams: The Sky Is the Limit."

"Major Dream" is an engaging read that will have you hooked from the beginning page and keep you mesmerized to the end. Jin's story has been lauded by critics as "one of the most profoundly affecting memoirs of the decade." Her incredible success proves that people really can create the lives they desire.

Regardless of background and hurdles to be faced, readers will find hope from "Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard PhD", and realize that if Jin Kyu Robertson, PhD can do it, it's possible for anyone to achieve the American Dream.

Amazon Reviews Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard Ph.D

Editorial Review of Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard Ph.D.

Unarguably one of the most profoundly affecting memoirs of the decade, Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard Ph.D. by Jin Kyu (Suh) Robertson is a major stroke of genius, hard work, and faith. In it there is major drama, major heart, major grit, and a major in the U.S. Army. And if one uses the half a million copies sold in Korea as any indication, it's destined to be a major success. It's destined to inspire, motivate, empower, encourage, entertain, and educate, which seems like an awful lot for one book, but then you haven't met the woman who wrote it.

Robertson's experience has been lauded as one of America's greatest success stories. Her success is evidence that people create the lives they want, and there's nothing that can stand in the way of opportunity. It's true that we have no choice at our birth and it's true that we often have no choice as to how we die. But how we live? That's a whole other matter. We have one life. This life and Jin Robertson is proof that it can be the life we want if we're willing to give their best and take a few chances. In seventeen engaging chapters with titles like "An Unwanted Baby Girl in Wollae" and "My First Love Ends: My American Dream Begins," the author uses a flashback approach beginning a flashback approach beginning with her Ph.D. from Harvard, which was a far cry from her beginnings in the U.S. But that's America for you. From factory girl to waitress, Jin came to America alone at age twenty-two as a housemaid with little English, a one-way ticket and $100 to her name. At twenty-eight, Jin, a mother of an infant daughter, joined the U.S. Army as a private to escape an abusive marriage. With determination, imagination, and sheer will, she retired as a U.S. Army major, received a master's then a doctorate-both from Harvard.
