FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. / Dr. Jin Kyu Robertson’s personal account of emigrating from Korea and prospering in the United States is the basis of 'Major Dream: From Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard Ph.D.' (ISBN 1453751076), which has sold more than half a million copies in her native country.

At the age of 22, Robertson immigrated to the United States with $100 in her pocket, very little English in her vocabulary and the promise of a job as a housemaid. Six years later, she didn’t find her life getting any better, aside from the birth of her daughter. Hoping to escape an abusive husband and a dull, unfulfilling life, Robertson signed up as a private for the United States Army.

Through sheer determination, imagination and will, Robertson created a better life for her and her daughter during the stint with the military. The author retired from the Army after serving twenty years and received her master’s and Ph.D. from Harvard University; her daughter followed in those same footsteps when she graduated from Harvard and joined the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer.

Robertson’s memoir strives to be considered one of America’s greatest personal success stories. She aims to show readers that people can create the lives they want despite the obstacles that often stand in the way of opportunity.

“Anyone can create the life they’ve always wanted,” Robertson says. “They have to be willing to give their best, place themselves in positions of opportunity, and take responsibility for producing quality results that cause others to want to work with you and for you.”

Robertson wants to inspire and motivate people through her personal story to help them live better and happier lives. Her memoir looks to help readers of all backgrounds to position themselves for opportunity and to live a life of success and happiness.
